Mother's Day and painting...

Last week, Tom and I went up to the Roost, planning to do some staining on the porches and deck. Of course, it rained buckets so we had to change the plan. Tom decided to paint some bedrooms and put up ceiling fans instead. (I had schoolwork to do, and drove up to Blowing Rock to meet the Parkway folks about my project). Let us know what you think of our colors (althought they're kind of hard to see in the photos)!

The Twin Bedroom
(pale green)

The Queen Bedroom
(lavender)

Last weekend, I took Mom up for Mother's Day. On Sunday, we went up to Doughton Park for a picnic and a hike...

Not a bad hike up that hill for a 91 year old!

Old friends...

We had a nice surprise a couple of weeks ago. Some old friends came up from Florida to visit us at the Roost. Kerry and Jeanna moved to Florida several years ago. Kerry worked with us at RJ Reynolds, and also helped Tom build the deck and do many other repairs at the old house. It was really good to see them. We went up to Doughton Park for a picnic on Saturday.....

On a different note, we finally found a sofa for the den - a sleeper from World Market.

Many Many updates

I am "woefully" behind in my posts - so here's a long post with lots of pictures - in no particular order....

New chest in our room.

Dresser that was in the can house at the old house that Tom refinished - and a second hand mirror I found at a consignment shop.

Headboard for our King bed

Runners for the hall.

Second hand vase with new flowers

Bluebird houses....Tom put up 3 around the house, and within 45 minutes we had 2 pairs checking them out and fighting over who was going to get which one!

New curtain for the kitchen

Harry and Anne back up on the wall

Rooster hook for the porch

Funky chicken napkin holder

And last but not least - moonrise over Catherine's Knob!

New episode in "War of the Roses"

Some of you know about Tom's ongoing "War of the Roses" - his obsession with ridding our land of the wild rose bushes that have taken over parts of the pasture. Well, the roses took victory in a battle earlier this week.......

While bush hogging down a dead rosebush, one of the branches jumped up, knocked his hat off and managed to leave a long gash across his nose. Thanks go out especially to his brave Ray's Weather cap, which sacrified its life to protect the rest of his head!

Meanwhile, this is how I spent my Wednesday afternoon.......

The big storm

Sorry for taking so long for an update - I'm swamped with schoolwork!

We didn't make it up for the big snow last weekend, but my cousins were up and sent some great shots......

Savannah meets the Roost!

This is long overdue. Brandon, Melody and Savannah all came up to the Roost the first weekend in February, and we had a blast. We went to town on Saturday morning, had breakfast at The Pines, and then headed over to Farmer's Hardware to buy her a wagon. .....
We also read books.....
and watched cartoons.....

She met the girls.....

and learned to drive Moo Moo in the wagon!

The mouse wars are over for now!

Yes, the mice are gone for now....even after all this cold weather the past week and a half. I was even brave enough to thoroughly clean and put everything back in the drawers and cabinets. We'll see.........

And the house survived the cold weather perfectly - no busted pipes, leaks or other consequences - except of course, the power bill!

I spent the weekend cleaning, and Tom worked outside taking down some trees to improve our view from the deck.

And here are a few presents for the Roost that I forgot to include in earlier blogs.....

One of my colleagues at the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation gave me this window hanging - it doesn't compete with Lee's message on her barn, but the sentiment is the same!

Tom's ex-wife gave us this great collage of family photos taken at Savannah's birthday party in November - it is our first hung picture at the Roost!

And Lucy found this great chicken for us - she now guards the "Twin Suite"!
